Quick Quiz Eric Seufert – Mobile Dev Memo

I started my career at Skype in Tallinn, Estonia working as an analyst. At the time, the App Store was still pretty immature but Facebook gaming was really big. I got introduced to the Freemium business model at Skype but saw gaming companies in Helsinki doing really interesting things with it for Facebook games, so I moved across the Baltic sea and started working in analytics for a company called Digital Chocolate in Ruoholahti on the edge of Helsinki. I bounced around a bit after that working for various mobile game developers and moved back to Helsinki in 2015 to work at Rovio, the developer of Angry Birds, as the VP of User Acquisition.

Now I run a consultancy, Heracles, and a software platform for mobile marketing analytics, Agamemnon, in addition to Mobile Dev Memo. And in 2014, I published Freemium Economics, a book about the freemium business model.

2. How is your day-to-day?

As a consultant, my day-to-day is pretty varied. I usually handle emails in the morning and try to squeeze in at least an hour of coding before lunch. After lunch, I’m 100% dedicated to client work, but what shape that work takes changes on a daily basis: I could be working for a VC, helping them do due diligence on a prospective investment, or I could be putting together a launch strategy for a developer, or I could be helping to design an analytics infrastructure. The variability keeps the work interesting.

I’ve also recently started running workshops, which is a lot of fun: I get to meet people from lots of different verticals, usually in the early stages of their careers.

3. If you didn’t work in app marketing sector, what would you be doing?

I’d probably be in finance.

4. How many years have you been working in the mobile industry? What has changed since you started to nowadays?

I joined Skype in 2009, so 8 years. The most pronounced change has been the evolution of the app economy and the massive amounts of money that is being generated in it.

5. How do you think the app marketing ecosystem would be in 3-5 years?

I think it’ll be a lot more developed and a lot more analytical / programmatic. We’re just now at a point where the tools ecosystem for mobile marketing has evolved to the point where everything can be more or less automated, but the connective tissue between many of the tool types isn’t fully formed. Once it is, mobile marketing will probably look a lot like high frequency trading, and so mobile marketers will take on more of a “quant” / developer profile rather than the sort of generalist analyst profile that is required now.

6. If you’d have to give any advice to an entrepreneur/business who’s ready to launch an app, what would it be?

Spend some time and money trying to figure out if there’s a market for your app before you actually build it and launch it.

7. Could you give us a hint about your keynote?

I’ll be giving a “State of the App Economy” talk which will provide a good overview of what’s happening in mobile and what we might expect in the next 12-18 months.

Hope you enjoy with the interview 😉 We are glad to have Eric Seufert at Applause Congress next May 27 at W Barcelona. Don’t you have your tickets? Buy them now!
